xiān qín qū yuán
( 先 秦 ) 屈 原
(Pre-Qin) Qu Yuan

dì gāo yáng zhī miáo yì xī
帝 高 阳 之 苗 裔 兮 ，
Emperor Gao Yang’s offspring,

zhèn huáng kǎo yuē bó yōng
朕 皇 考 曰 伯 庸 。
My noble father was called Bo Yong.

shè tí zhēn yú mèng zōu xī
摄 提 贞 于 孟 陬 兮 ，
He grasped the essence of Meng Zou,

wéi gēng yín wú yǐ jiàng
惟 庚 寅 吾 以 降 。
On the day of Geng Yin, I was born.

huáng lǎn kuí yú chū dù xī
皇 览 揆 余 初 度 兮 ，
The emperor assessed my early years,

zhào xī yú yǐ jiā míng
肇 锡 余 以 嘉 名 ：
And bestowed upon me a fine name:

míng yú yuē zhèng zé xī
名 余 曰 正 则 兮 ，
My name is Zheng Ze,

zì yú yuē líng jūn
字 余 曰 灵 均 。
And my style is Ling Jun.

fēn wú jì yǒu cǐ nèi měi xī
纷 吾 既 有 此 内 美 兮 ，
With such inner beauty I was graced,

yòu chóng zhī yǐ xiū tài
又 重 之 以 修 能 。
And further enhanced by my refined skills.

hù jiāng lí yǔ pì zhǐ xī
扈 江 离 与 辟 芷 兮 ，
I adorned myself with Jiang Li and Bi Zhi,

rèn qiū lán yǐ wéi pèi
纫 秋 兰 以 为 佩 。
And wore autumn orchids as my pendant.

yù yú ruò jiāng bù jí xī
汩 余 若 将 不 及 兮 ，
In haste, as if I couldn’t reach my goal,

kǒng nián suì zhī bù wú yǔ
恐 年 岁 之 不 吾 与 。
I feared the passing years would not wait for me.

zhāo qiān pí zhī mù lán xī
朝 搴 阰 之 木 兰 兮 ，
In the morning, I picked the magnolia by the river,

xī lǎn zhōu zhī sù mǎng
夕 揽 洲 之 宿 莽 。
In the evening, I gathered the mugwort from the isle.

rì yuè hū qí bù yān xī
日 月 忽 其 不 淹 兮 ，
The sun and moon swiftly pass by,

chūn yǔ qiū qí dài xù
春 与 秋 其 代 序 。
Spring and autumn take turns in their sequence.

wéi cǎo mù zhī líng luò xī
惟 草 木 之 零 落 兮 ，
Only the withered grass and trees,

kǒng měi rén zhī chí mù
恐 美 人 之 迟 暮 。
Fear the twilight of the once beautiful.

bù fǔ zhuàng ér qì huì xī
不 抚 壮 而 弃 秽 兮 ，
Why not discard the filth while still strong and vigorous?

hé bù gǎi hū cǐ dù
何 不 改 乎 此 度 ？
Why not change this mindset?

chéng qí jì yǐ chí chěng xī
乘 骐 骥 以 驰 骋 兮 ，
Ride the mighty steed and gallop forth,

lái wú dǎo fú xiān lù
来 吾 道 夫 先 路 。
I shall lead the way on my path.
